AHOSKIE, NC––Roanoke-Chowan Community College (R-CCC) recognized nursing faculty Annette Thompson, BSN, RN, with the prestigious DAISY Nurse Educator Award during a ceremony held May 5, honoring her decades of impact on nursing education and student success.

The DAISY Foundation, established to recognize nurses and educators for extraordinary compassion and clinical excellence, celebrates individuals who go above and beyond in shaping the future of the profession.

R-CCC President Dr. Murray J. Williams praised Thompson’s lasting contributions to the college and the healthcare field.

“Annette Thompson exemplifies the very best of what it means to be a nurse educator,” Williams said. “Her passion for teaching, her commitment to student success and her dedication to compassionate care have made a lasting impact not only on this college, but also on the countless lives her students will touch throughout their careers.”

R-CCC Dean of Nursing Programs Kim White, MSN, RN said the college is proud to partner with the DAISY Foundation to recognize outstanding educators who demonstrate excellence in teaching and mentorship.

“We are very proud to partner with DAISY as we have extraordinary nurses here at our community college,” White said, noting the program’s global reach and significance in elevating the nursing profession.

Thompson, who has more than 40 years of experience in nursing, was nominated by colleagues and students who praised her transformational influence in shaping future nurses.

“For more than 40 years as a nurse, you have shaped and inspired countless nurses who are now serving patients and communities with compassion, knowledge and excellence,” White said. “Your dedication to nursing education is evident not only in the success of your students, but also in the lives you have touched through your patience, leadership and commitment.”

The nomination also highlighted Thompson’s role as a mentor and leader.

“Watching the way you lead, teach and advocate for students has been both inspiring and motivating,” added White.

Throughout her career at R-CCC, Thompson has been recognized for her commitment to developing the next generation of nurses, instilling in them the values of perseverance, empathy and professional excellence. Many former students credit her mentorship for their success in the field.

Upon receiving the award, Thompson expressed gratitude and reflected on her years of service.

“I’m stunned. I thank you,” Thompson said. “It has been a joy. It’s been a thrill. I’ve met some wonderful people and had some wonderful mentors… I pray that I have instilled in those I have taught.”

She also shared that stepping away from teaching was a difficult decision, made in part to honor a promise to her family.

The DAISY Nurse Educator Award recognizes faculty who demonstrate exceptional dedication to teaching, inspire students and significantly contribute to the nursing profession. College officials said Thompson’s legacy will continue through the many students she has guided over the years.

“Her impact will be felt for generations,” White said. “The nurses she has inspired will carry forward her commitment to excellence in patient care and education.”
