R-CCC Teams Log More Than 6 Million Steps in Statewide Wellness Challenge

AHOSKIE, NC – Roanoke-Chowan Community College (R-CCC) faculty and staff recently completed the Miles for Wellness Challenge 32, a statewide initiative encouraging North Carolina state employees to incorporate daily movement into their lives. Over the course of eight weeks, two R-CCC teams—RideTheWave and RideTheWave2—collectively logged more than 6.7 million steps, demonstrating a strong commitment to health and wellness.

Miles for Wellness, organized by the Office of State Human Resources, promotes physical activity through a virtual journey across themed trails. Participants can walk, run or convert other activities such as gardening or housework into steps using provided tools. The program emphasizes the benefits of regular movement, including weight control, reduced risk of chronic disease, improved mental health and increased longevity.

Final Results:

  • RideTheWave: 3,511,168 steps
  • RideTheWave2: 3,263,568 steps

R-CCC President Dr. Murray J. Williams praised the participants for their dedication,
“Congratulations on completing eight energetic weeks of the Miles4Wellness challenge! I couldn’t be prouder of the commitment and teamwork you’ve demonstrated. Your intentional steps and consistent participation are a testament to the dedication you bring to every part of our college community—including your personal health and wellness.
Milestones like these are not just about the numbers, though your achievements—over three million steps by each team—are truly outstanding. More importantly, you’ve cultivated healthy habits, supported one another, and set an inspiring example for those around you.

Let’s continue this momentum—not as a challenge, but as an ongoing commitment to ourselves and each other. Every step matters, and together we’re building a stronger, healthier college community.”

Danielle Ruffin, Dean of Student Affairs, also commended the teams, “I am truly proud of each and every one of you. You literally stepped out of your comfort zones and were intentional and consistent with your daily steps. Remember, this is much bigger than just a challenge—let this be a lifestyle change.”

Miles for Wellness is more than a competition—it’s an opportunity to build lasting habits that improve physical and mental well-being. R-CCC encourages all employees and community members to keep moving forward and make wellness a priority.
