R-CCC Welcomes Charmaine Smith as New Dean of Academic Affairs
AHOSKIE, NC –Roanoke-Chowan Community College (R-CCC) is proud to announce the appointment of Charmaine Smith as its new Dean of Academic Affairs. Smith officially began her role on Feb. 2, 2025, bringing a wealth of experience in education, leadership and nonprofit service to the college’s academic division.
Smith’s professional background spans both secondary and higher education, as well as nonprofit leadership. Her academic career includes teaching high school mathematics and business and serving on the college faculty in Developmental Math, Information Technology, Business Administration and Office Systems Technology. In administrative roles, she has served as an Instructional Coordinator for Information Technology, managed a Business Administration program, and chaired an educational technology department overseeing the Learning Management System (LMS), student academic support and faculty development.
She holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in small business management/entrepreneurship and a Master of Arts in Teaching from East Carolina University. Smith also earned an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and a Post-Master Certificate in Information Technology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She is currently pursuing a Post-Master Certificate in Higher Education Leadership at East Carolina University.
Her professional certifications include Quality Matters Teaching Online and Higher Education Peer Reviewer Certifications, Instructional Design and Coaching credentials from the Association for Talent Development, and a range of technical certifications including Microsoft Office productivity software.
Smith was inspired to join R-CCC after reading an article on EdNC.org that highlighted the college’s bold vision and commitment to innovation, student success and community impact. “I was drawn to the college’s ability to make swift, bold moves to demonstrate its viability and redefine its trajectory when faced with challenges,” said Smith. “The leadership’s focus on students, data-informed decisions and a strong community commitment aligned with my own values. It felt like the kind of place I want to be a part of at this stage in my career.”
As Dean of Academic Affairs, Smith aims to bring innovation and best practices to strengthen the academic division. “My goal is to ensure our programs are forward-thinking and responsive to student needs,” she said. “I’m excited to contribute to building the best Academic Affairs division in the system, and to support our students and the communities we serve.”
R-CCC President Dr. Murray J. Williams expressed enthusiasm for Smith’s appointment. “Dean Smith brings an exceptional blend of academic insight, administrative leadership and a deep commitment to student success. Her passion for innovation and excellence aligns seamlessly with our mission,” said Williams. “We are thrilled to welcome her to R-CCC, and I am confident that she will make an immediate and lasting impact on our college and community.”
Outside of her professional life, Smith enjoys bowling, playing games and engaging in creative pursuits such as crafting, jewelry-making, painting and home décor.
