Program Overview

Roanoke-Chowan Community College offers training in Cosmetic Arts for students seeking to build professional skills and pursue licensure in the rapidly growing beauty and personal care industry. Our programs in Barbering and Natural Hair Care Specialist provide comprehensive instruction that prepares students for state board examinations and entry into rewarding careers in salons, barbershops, spas, and entrepreneurial settings. 

Courses emphasize core industry standards including sanitation and safety, client consultation, hair and scalp analysis, cutting and styling techniques, natural hair maintenance, and professional business practices. Students gain hands-on experience that builds confidence and readiness for careers as licensed barbers, natural hair care specialists, or independent practitioners.

Students pursuing Cosmetic Arts training at Roanoke-Chowan Community College gain the skills and confidence needed to enter a profession built on artistry, technique, and exceptional client service. Whether students are beginning a new career or expanding their current skills, these programs offer a strong pathway into a creative, people-centered profession.

Course Descriptions:

Arrow right Barbering

Tuition: $180, plus fees (additional costs include: student permit, textbook, kit, uniform, etc.)

This course provides instruction in classroom and clinical education necessary to sit for the nc barber licensing examination. Per the NC Board of Barbers curriculum, this training requires 1528 hours of training, plus successful completion of practical skills. After successful completion of the program, students are eligible to apply to the NC Board of Barbers and schedule a licensing exam.

Arrow right Natural Hair Care Specialist

Tuition: $210, plus fees (additional costs include: instructional supplies, textbook, kit, uniform, etc.)

This is a 328-hour course designed to teach how to care for natural hair without the use of chemicals such as perms/relaxers and hair color. The style techniques include braiding, twisting, wrapping, extending and locking natural hair. The coursework also includes teaching the proper health, safety, and sanitation procedures to avoid spreading infections. The students will be able to apply their skills to clients who visit the clinic. After successfully completing the course, the students will be able to sit for the North Carolina State Board of Cosmetic Arts exam to become a licensed Natural Hair Care Specialist.
