SECU Foundation Presents Scholarship Funds to Benefit R-CCC Students

AHOSKIE, NC – Roanoke-Chowan Community College (R-CCC) welcomed representatives of the State Employees Credit Union (SECU) on Nov. 4 for the presentation of SECU Foundation’s “People Helping People” Community College Scholarships and Bridge to Career Scholarships.

The SECU Foundation has invested more than $11 billion over the past 20 years to make higher education more accessible and affordable for North Carolina students.

“It is a privilege to stand before you today and to celebrate the achievements of our outstanding students who’ve been awarded scholarships through SECU Foundation,” said R-CCC President Dr. Murray J. Williams. “These scholarships represent more than financial support. They are a powerful investment in the future of our students, empowering them to pursue meaningful careers and contribute to the vitality of our community. We are deeply grateful to the SECU Foundation for their continued commitment.”

R-CCC student Nisachon Jitson of Murfreesboro received one of this year’s SECU Foundation “People Helping People” Community College Scholarships. Each North Carolina community college receives two-year scholarships valued at up to $5,000 each, representing an annual financial commitment of up to $580,000 statewide.

“I’m so thankful for this scholarship opportunity,” said Jitson, a second-year Associate Degree Nursing student. “I started in the RN program and will continue.”

Teresa Wiggins, vice chair of the SECU Ahoskie Advisory Board, highlighted the SECU Bridge to Career Scholarship program, which totals $18,000 at R-CCC. Established in 2018, the program helps remove financial barriers for students pursuing short-term, career-focused training that leads to state-regulated or industry-recognized credentials.

The Bridge to Career program provides $500 scholarships to up to 30 eligible students at each North Carolina community college. Funds are applied to education expenses through the colleges’ workforce continuing education divisions.
