R-CCC to Host “Americans and the Holocaust” Exhibition and Public Programming
AHOSKIE, NC – Roanoke-Chowan Community College (R ‑ CCC) will host a series of educational programs and community events in conjunction with the Americans and the Holocaust traveling exhibition, offering opportunities for reflection, learning, and community engagement.
The exhibition, presented in partnership with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, explores Americans’ responses to the Holocaust during the 1930s and 1940s and encourages visitors to consider the role individuals and institutions play in shaping history.
R-CCC’s library staff recently completed specialized training to prepare for the exhibition, equipping them to guide visitors through the historical content and facilitate thoughtful discussions. The initiative reflects the college’s ongoing commitment to serving as a cultural and educational hub for the region.
Grand Opening and Full Schedule of Events
The public is invited to attend the exhibition’s grand opening on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 9 a.m. to noon in the R-CCC Library. The event will include refreshments .
R-CCC President Dr. Murray J. Williams encourages the community to attend and participate .
“This exhibition provides a powerful opportunity for our community to explore an important chapter in history and reflect on how individual actions and choices shape the world around us,” Williams said. “We invite everyone to visit the college, experience the exhibit, and take part in the meaningful conversations it inspires.”
A wide range of free programs will be offered throughout the exhibition:

Book Club Program (Aug. 24 and Sept. 17, 2 p.m., Library)
Participants will receive a free copy of The Book Thief or Maus and gather for facilitated discussions.

Holocaust Testimony Film Series (Aug. 26; Sept. 2, 9, 16, 23 at 2 p.m., Auditorium)
Screenings of a four-part video featuring Renée Fink’s testimony as a hidden child in the Netherlands and her experiences during and after World War II.

Day of Remembrance (Sept. 1, All Day)
R - CCC Library invites all NC Libraries to participate in a Day of Remembrance through book displays, moments of silence or other reflective activities.

“The Stories We Tell: North Carolina’s Links to the Holocaust” (Sept. 4–5, 9 a.m. , Auditorium )
Presented by Jeremy Wilson and Staci Wilson of Catawba Valley Community College, this program highlights North Carolina connections to Holocaust history and features elements of the Gilde-Marx Collection.

Teaching the Holocaust Workshop (Sept. 10, 9 a.m.–3 p.m., Auditorium)
Educators, librarians, homeschool families, and community members are invited to this in-depth workshop led by experts from the N.C. Department of Public Instruction and the Stan Greenspon Holocaust Education Center.

North Carolina and the Holocaust (Sept. 11–12, 9 a.m. , Auditorium )
Katie Cunningham of the Stan Greenspon Holocaust Education Center will examine how global events were experienced locally and their lasting impact.

Guest Speaker Lily Hirsch (Sept. 16, 9 a.m., Gym)
Musicologist Lily Hirsch will present on artistic censorship and the life of Anneliese Landau, offering insight into the cultural impact of the Holocaust era.
- Virtual Holocaust Survivor Testimony (Sept. 17–18, 9 a.m., Gym)
Renée Fink will share her personal story of survival, resilience, and life after the war.
- WWII Programming with Jo Ann Williford (Sept. 24–25, 9 a.m., Gym)
The past Education Supervisor at NC Office of Archives and History Jo Ann Williford will present on America’s debate over entering World War II and its far-reaching consequences.
All events are free and open to the public.

Americans and the Holocaust: A Traveling Exhibition for Libraries
is an educational initiative of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the American Library Association. The traveling exhibition began by touring to 50 U.S. libraries from 2021 to 2023; due to widespread interest from libraries and communities around the country, a second tour was developed for 2024 to 2026.
