Roanoke-Chowan Community College Launches
Better Skills. Better Jobs. Campaign to Enroll Adult Learners

With the Next NC Scholarship, many adults have an opportunity to return to school
for free and earn the skills needed to secure a high-paying job

AHOSKIE, NC–– Roanoke-Chowan Community College has launched a new Better Skills. Better Jobs. campaign to help more adults gain the training and skills they need to secure a higher-paying job and to meet the needs of employers in the region. With the state’s Next NC Scholarship, many adults can attend tuition-free.

“At Roanoke-Chowan, we are committed to opening doors and creating opportunities that change lives. No matter where someone is in their journey, our college is a place where they can grow, succeed, and take meaningful steps toward a brighter future.” said Dr. Murray J. Williams, president of Roanoke-Chowan Community College. “The Better Skills. Better Jobs. initiative, along with the Next NC Scholarship, is creating new pathways for adult learners to re-engage with their education and take meaningful steps toward their goals, while contributing to the long-term vitality of communities across our state.”

Thanks to the Next NC Scholarship, a financial aid program that helps most North Carolinians from households making $80,000 pursue education and training after high school for free, eligible students attending Roanoke-Chowan Community College will receive at least $3,000 per year to pay for tuition. The best part? It’s money that doesn’t have to be paid back.

The Better Skills. Better Jobs. initiative includes direct outreach to adults who previously earned some college credits but left without a degree or certification; special community events and earned media promotions; targeted digital marketing and advertising, and customized materials designed to quickly help more adult learners reconnect and re-enroll.

Many higher-wage jobs today require more than a high school diploma, but unfortunately, less than half of North Carolinians between the ages 25-44 have the education and training needed to fill these jobs. Meanwhile, employers across the region are frantically looking for the skilled talent needed to fill current jobs.

That is why Roanoke-Chowan Community College, the John M. Belk Endowment, and several other state and local partners are working together to launch the special outreach campaign to attract even more adult learners back to college.

“Every North Carolinian should have the chance to pursue new opportunities and build a stronger future, and there is no better place to start than at a community college,” said MC Belk Pilon, President and Board Chair of the John M. Belk Endowment. “Roanoke-Chowan Community College plays a critical role in that effort—connecting individuals to the education and training they need to succeed, while also helping employers find the skilled talent that keeps our economy moving forward.”
