R-CCC CCR Graduate Blannie Ward to March in Commencement at Age 70
AHOSKIE, NC–– At 70 years old, Blannie Ward is proving it is never too late to achieve a lifelong goal.
Ward, a native of Ahoskie, has completed her High School Equivalency credential through the College and Career Readiness (CCR) program and will be the oldest CCR graduate participating in the college’s commencement ceremony on May 1.
Ward returned to school after retiring on disability following a 33‑year career with Perdue. She said health challenges led her into retirement, but the change also opened the door to a new purpose.
Ward explained, “After I came out on disability, I didn’t have anything to do during the day, so I said, ‘I’m going back to school.’”
Although this was not her first experience in the classroom, Ward said persistence carried her through the journey. She had stepped away from school years earlier and returned about a year ago to complete her credential.
Before retiring, Ward also worked in three sewing factories and at a local convenience store. She credits encouragement from her family, faculty and faith community for helping her stay motivated and confident.
“My sons, Thomas Parker Sr. and Terrence Walton, encouraged me to finish,” Ward said. “Ms. Miranda Lassiter, the CCR director, also encouraged me a lot. She’s always saying, ‘You’re never too old.’ I thank God, my church family and my family for pushing me to keep going.”
Ward said she especially enjoyed the learning environment and the support from instructors, who helped break down difficult subjects such as math and science.
“I enjoyed the kids, and I enjoyed learning,” she said. “The teachers break everything down, and they give you a chance to really understand. I loved using the technology and learning how to Google things. The experience prepares you.”
Now a graduate, Ward hopes her story inspires others who may be hesitant to return to school.
“Don’t worry about what you think you can’t do,” she said. “I had good people around me that kept me boosted and confident. Don’t let negative talk stop you. They are there to help you.”
Ward said walking across the commencement stage will be an emotional and proud moment.
“I thank God that I get the chance to wear that cap and gown and walk across that stage,” she said. “I’m just overjoyed.”
Looking ahead, Ward said she hopes to continue her education by pursuing a Certified Nurse Aide I license, building on her experience caring for sick family members.
As she prepares for commencement day, Ward says her achievement belongs not just to her, but to everyone who believed in her.
“It’s all about encouragement,” she said. “And now they’ll see me walk across that stage.”
